Bike to the Sea’s Northern Strand Bike Path Brings Outdoor Seekers from Malden to the Seaside of Nahant Beach

Bike to the Sea | The Northern Strand Community Trail

Did you know there is a bike trail running through Malden? Winding its way past restaurants, businesses and apartments, The Northern Strand Community Trail extends from Everett to the seacoast of Lynn. Started by a community of cyclists called Bike to the Sea, The Northern Strand Community Trail is part of a mission to connect Everett to the northern beaches car-free. Currently, the trail runs through Everett, Malden, Revere and Saugus and will soon stretch to Lynn and Nahant Beach, providing a safe commuting and seaside destination for cyclists wanting to explore north of the city of Boston.

Started in 1993, Bike to the Sea is a charitable non-profit in the Malden area that promotes bicycling and bicycle safety. One of the first bicycle trips made in the 1890’s by the Malden Bicycle Club was to Revere Beach. 100 years later Bike to the Sea continues the tradition and is connecting the community even further through The Northern Strand Community Trail. This bike path runs along the former route of the Saugus Branch Railroad, operating from 1853-1958. Many local breweries like that of Idle Hands and Night Shift Brewery dot the trail, which winds through Malden. Malden, which is home to a bakery and coffee facility, beckons riders to break for a quick refuel on their way to the seaside.

Other points of interest along the route include America’s largest model train store, paying tribute to the history of the path. Eclectic restaurants along the bike path offer plenty more respites on the way to Nahant Beach. In Saugus, a tree canopy encloses the trail near the Anna Parker Playground, where every Tuesday during the summer bikers can cruise by and pick up farmers market staples.

As Spring arrives, pick a weekend, grab a friend and your bike and head to the Northern Strand Community Trail to explore the outdoors. For a full trail map, visit Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s TrailLink.
